THE ACTIVE CONTROL APPROACH TO BE DEVELOPED AND DEMONSTRATED IN THIS WORK IS BASED ON THE CONCEPT OF ACTUATION POWER MINIMIZATION. THIS IS A DECENTRALIZED CONTROL CONCEPT, MEANING ALL SENSING, CONTROL INPUT CALCULATION, AND ACTUATION IS DONE LOCAL TO A SPECIFIC ACTUATOR ATTACHED TO THE STRUCTURE. THIS LOCAL CONTROL APPROACH REDUCES THE NEED FOR EXTENSIVE WIRING TO CONNECT DISTRIBUTED ACTUATORS AND SENSORS AND ELIMINATES THE NEED FOR A CENTRALIZED CONTROL PROCESSING UNIT THAT COORDINATES THE EFFORTS OF MANY ACTUATORS. ALTHOUGH THE SIMPLICITY OF A DECENTRALIZED CONTROL APPROACH IS DESIRABLE, THE APPROACH IS NOT WITHOUT CHALLENGES. THESE INCLUDE ENSURING THAT LOCALLY OPTIMIZED CONTROL INPUTS PRODUCE A NET REDUCTION IN A RELEVANT GLOBAL PERFORMANCE METRIC, SUCH AS SOUND POWER IN THE PASSENGER CABIN. SPECIFIC FREQUENCIES OF INTEREST SHALL BE SELECTED BY THE CONTRACTOR BASED ON KNOWLEDGE OF THE FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION OF GEAR MESH TONES IN PRODUCTION ROTORCRAFT. THE THREE-YEAR PROGRAM SHALL ACHIEVE THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC OVERALL OBJECTIVES: 1. ESTABLISH A FUNDAMENTAL UNDERSTANDING AND EXPERTISE OF THE MINIMAL POWER CONTROL METHODOLOGY AND DEMONSTRATE FEASIBILITY ON A PROOF-OF-CONCEPT TEST IN YEAR 1. 2. OUR APPROACH FOR THE 2 M SOURCE WAS A COMPACT LINEAR RESONATOR THAT DEMONSTRATED 65 MW OF SINGLE FREQUENCY OUTPUT COMPARED TO A GOAL OF 20 MW. OUR APPROACH FOR THE 1064/532/355 NM SOURCE WAS INTRACAVITY SECOND AND THIRD HARMONIC GENERATION IN A COMPACT 1064 NM RING LASER THAT DEMONSTRATED SIMULTANEOUS SINGLE-FREQUENCY OUTPUTS OF 520 MW AT 1064 NM, 240 MW AT 532 NM, AND 1.9 MW AT 355 NM. THE GOAL WAS>1 MW AT 355 NM.
